About

Belong Art Community started with artists that have a deep sense of self and social justice. Some residents live with developmental disabilities that they understand and embrace. Independent and private apartments, convenient for non-drivers to get to favorite places and people, comfortable, low-maintenance and connected with kindred, diverse caring neighbors as much — or as little — as they choose.

Three years of searching brought some interesting ideas and glimpses of the possible and didn’t lead to a dream home. Many Portlanders are looking for the kind of community they desire for themselves.

The circle grew.  When the allies couldn’t find it, they decided to help the artists — and creative adults like them — create it. They bought a lot in Portland’s Hollywood district. It’s a charming walkable neighborhood with unmatched access to transit and a vibrant Portland scene. The circle grew again – adding more parents, artists, developmentally disabled young adults, and thoughtful listeners who helped imagine what a community needs and what it should avoid.

It grew again.  They hired a think-outside-the-box architect and an ingenious general contractor. They recruited good-hearted developers and investors with deep commitment to livability, genuine community, and unique, inclusive housing needs.

Belong Art Community is organized, governed and managed to serve the needs and priorities of its developmental disability and artist resident community. Belong Art Community is a 501(c)(3) exempt public charity.

Mission

Belong Art Community’s mission is to provide housing, educational, supportive services for developmentally disabled individuals that are seeking independence in a community that also includes neuro-typical artists and represents a diverse population.
